Turners are proud to be partnering with young Kiwi driver Sam Wright.

Sam is a 15 year old from Auckland who races karts and is competing the Toyota 86 Championship. In 2018 Sam focused on North Island Endurance Series which kicks off at Hampton Downs. Sam also competed in the 2018/2019 Toyota 86 Championship.

See below for more information from Sam.

I have been racing since I was 6 years old, I started out at Mount Wellington kart club and now find myself racing all over New Zealand and more recently in Australia at the Rotax Pro Tour. My racing doesn’t just involve turning up to the track on a Friday morning to start practice for the weekend event. It involves getting the kart and trailer ready for long hauls, big events and successful weekends away racing. During the year the main events that I compete in are The New Zealand Rotax Max Challenge, National Sprint Championship, North Islands, National Schools and Rotax Pro Tour in Australia.

During my Rookie season of the Toyota 86 Championship I raced all over New Zealand starting at Pukekohe with the V8 Supercars and heading as far south as Invercargill also travelling to Christchurch, Palmerston North, Taupo and Hampton Downs.

During the week leading up to an event I do the majority of the work on my car. I really enjoy doing this as not only do I get to learn how to do it, but I also gain a better understanding about how the components of my car which then allows me to give more detailed feedback to my mechanic during test and race weekends. I also go to my personal trainer 3x weekly to improve my cardio and strength.

I was awarded with the Bruce McLaren Award at the 2017 National Schools. This award was awarded to the overall winner of which had the biggest class at the National Schools Championship held in Blenheim. Bruce McLaren once said "To do something well is so worthwhile that to die trying to do it better cannot be foolhardy. It would be a waste of life to do nothing with one's ability, for I feel that life is measured in achievement, not in years alone.” It was an absolute privilege to be the recipient of this award and it is one that will be treasured and remembered forever.
