Not all cheap cars are cheap for the same reason. Some are older but well looked after. Some have travelled a lot but still have plenty of life left in them. Others might need a bit of cosmetic love from an owner who isn't afraid of a weekend project.

What Kind of Cheap Car Is Right for Me?

Most cheap cars for sale fall into one of these categories:

• Low mileage but older cars
• Newer cars with high mileage
• Cars with cosmetic or condition issues
• Less popular models with lower demand
• Repairable vehicles

Let's look at each type.

Low Mileage Cars, But Older

This is often the safest option for buyers on a tight budget.

These cars are usually more than 10 years old but have travelled relatively few kilometres. You might find a 2008 Toyota, Mazda or Nissan with fewer than 100,000km on the clock and a surprisingly affordable price tag.

In many cases, these vehicles have had the same owner for years and were only used for short trips around town.

Newer Cars With High Mileage

Some people see a high odometer reading and run for the hills. Sometimes that's the right move. Sometimes it's a fantastic opportunity.

Many of these vehicles have spent their lives travelling long distances on open roads rather than sitting in city traffic.

Highway driving is generally easier on a vehicle than thousands of short stop-start trips.

Cheap Cars With Condition Issues

Sometimes a vehicle is cheap because it isn't perfect.

Maybe there's a scratch down one side. Maybe the paint has faded. Maybe a previous owner had a disagreement with a supermarket trolley and lost.

While these imperfections can look dramatic, they don't always affect how the car drives.

Less Popular Models Can Be Great Bargains

Sometimes a car is cheap for one simple reason: people aren't searching for it.

Everyone wants a Toyota Corolla, Mazda CX-5 or Ford Ranger. Fewer people search for some equally reliable alternatives.

A less fashionable make or model can often provide similar reliability, safety and performance while costing thousands less.

Don't Buy the Cheapest Car. Buy the Best Value Car.

The cheapest car on the page isn't always the best deal.

If you're not a car person, don't worry. You don't need to be a mechanic to spot obvious red flags. Before you buy, take a few minutes to look and listen:

• ✅ Take it for a test drive. Does it feel better than your current or previous car?
• ✅ Does the engine start easily and idle smoothly?
• ✅ Are there any warning lights on the dashboard?
• ✅ Does the car shake, rattle, or make strange knocking noises?
• ✅ Is there excessive smoke coming from the exhaust?
• ✅ Are bumpers, mirrors, lights and panels securely attached?
• ✅ Do the brakes feel normal?
• ✅ Are the tyres in reasonable condition?

Still unsure? Consider paying for a pre-purchase inspection. For around $200-$300, a mechanic can check for obvious mechanical, structural and safety issues before you commit to buying. That's often the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy.
