Absolute Power and Luxury

When the Bentley Continental Flying Spur was launched just over 20 years ago it was the fastest, most powerful production saloon car in the world. It has a W12 engine that produces 552hp and a 0-100kph time of 4.9 seconds. But the big Bentley is not the sort of car you drag race Nissan Skylines from the traffic lights. No, the Flying Spur is a show of absolute power. Big boss power. Although now you can buy this 2009 example for Camry money.
The Bentley Continental Flying Spur is the sort of car owned by someone who owns a paper mill or a media empire. Maybe the owner of a football club or a flash hotel. But today you can buy this one for a pretty modest outlay, as long as you can cover the fuel and maintenance costs.
Back in 2009 this Bentley would’ve cost $200k+ and for that you got the performance as well as extreme comfort. The Flying Spur has air ride suspension, continuous damping control, the leather of a whole herd of England’s finest cows, a 6 litre, twin turbo W12 engine and real wood interior accents. It’s not just absolute power, it’s absolute luxury too.
However, with the passing of time comes a lowering of price, to the point where this NZ new example with 153,500kms on board has an auction estimate of just $18500 - $21500. The bar of entry is very low in this case. Sure, visits to the petrol station will be horrific and frequent, but lording your power over the masses can’t be achieved in an economical city car.
This luxury conveyance is being auctioned at Turners Hamilton. More details here.
