The Family Supercar

The BMW F10 M5 is a supercar for the whole family at a very un-supercar price. It has an 8 cylinder, twin turbocharged engine that pumps out 550hp with a sub 4.5 second 0-100kph time. But unlike other supercars it also has plenty of room for the kids and a couple of dogs, all of which will be truly excited/terrified every time you hit the loud pedal. All of this with an auction estimate of under $16k. Read on...

The BMW M5 was first released in 1985 but this F10 (2011-2016) packs a bit more punch than the earlier cars. The V8 engine has two turbochargers and is mated to a 7 speed dual clutch transmission that can change gear at a speed that makes blinking seem ponderous– try doing it that fast with your standard manual shift. Add in features straight out of F1 such as launch control and a 0-100kph time of 4.4 seconds with a top speed of over 300kph and you start to realise the retail price of $200,000+ was quite reasonable when it was new.

Twelve years on and the F10 M5 is still an impressive piece of kit but without the $200k+ price tag. This wonderful 2014 example, with 120,700kms on the clock, has an auction estimate of $14,000-$16,000. It’s hard to imagine finding more performance, comfort and handsome looks for less. The car is at Turners Cars Wairakei and the auction is on June 8th. More details here.
