Olden Holden

When was the last time you saw a rep spec Holden Commodore VP in the wild that wasn’t on blocks with a family of chickens living in it? Surely those that have survived have clocked up moon mileage with permanent retirement beckoning? Well no, as our car dealership in New Plymouth have this low kilometre survivor for sale right now at $6990. Is the VP Berlina a future classic? Well the HQ Belmont became a classic, so why not?

Now plenty will argue that this car is indeed a classic already, and rightly so. It’s over 30 years old, and it’s relatively rare, especially in this condition with low kilometres. Is it more a case of “rare but nobody cares”? Maybe at the moment. But as with most Holdens before it, its time will almost certainly come.

Now, what’s the better trim level?  Holden Commodore fans will generally understand that ‘Executive’ is the base model, ‘Berlina’ the midrange model and ‘Calais’ the luxury model. And then there are the sportier ones as well. But have you ever wondered why Holden Australia decided that the ‘Executive’ model was the lowest spec and ‘Berlina’, basically Italian for ‘sedan’, was the mid spec? Well Holden NZ did. For the NZ assembled VN Commodores the names were reversed presumebly because, surely, ‘Executive’ sounds like a classier model. The base model should really have been called the ‘Sales Rep’. Anyway, NZ switched them as it made more sense but then switched them back to stay consistent with Aussie.

This particular Commodore was sold new in NZ in 1993 and has covered just 140,700kms since then by 5 owners. It has WOF and rego, has just been serviced and generally looks like a well cared for car. It is available to buy now for $6990 and comes with a 5 day money back guarantee.

Is it a classic? Is it a future classic? Who cares, it’s a really good example of a once popular model here in NZ, which will mean you will be approached constantly by people telling you they had one back in the day and it was the best car they ever owned. More details here.

If this VP Berlina isn’t quite what you’re after, we’ve got more choices across the country. With over 20 branches nationwide, finding a car dealer near you is easy.
