An Aussie Bronco

The trouble with owning an American classic is usually the position of the steering wheel; it’s always a bit of a compromise. Some will say it doesn’t bother them, which seems doubtful, but it’s a compromise many are prepared to make to own a piece of classic Americana. But did you know that right hand drive Ford Broncos were built in Aussie? Well it’s true, and we have one for auction right now. Read on...
The Ford Bronco is a staple of American motoring. It was launched in 1966 and remained in production over five generations until 1996. So what happened? Why did Ford kill the Bronco? After all, the Bronco was well loved as a down to earth, rugged, honest American wagon. What could possibly go wrong? Well OJ Simpson went wrong. His infamous slow speed chase, watched live around the world, put the Bronco in the spotlight, and not in a good way. Ford maintains this wasn’t the reason for the Bronco’s demise, saying sales had been dropping before OJ. But it probably didn’t help. The Bronco was revived in 2021, and OJ departed this world 3 years later.
This particular Bronco was built in Australia in 1981 and made its way to NZ four years later. It is registered as having a 4.1l 6 cylinder engine but appears to have a V8 fitted with a manual box. It’s a bit rugged, especially the interior, but it has a wof and rego and would make a good candidate for a rolling restoration, or drive as is.
The auction has ended.
