Grandma Spec Survivor Honda

Low kilometres, peak 90s new car upholstery fabric, no air conditioning and a Honda. All this adds up to your grandmother’s car that she used for short trips to the shops and the bowls club. This 1996 Honda Civic LXI is an incredibly original survivor, and one that could make a great daily today. By today’s standards, this model Civic is simple, reliable and decent to drive, especially with the manual gearbox. And you can own it now from Turners Tauranga. Read on...

The Toyota Corolla was the benchmark in this class, but the Civic was the choice of discerning grandmothers up and down the country. And that seat fabric may have been at least part of the reason. It’s spectacularly ‘of its time’ and surely will remain a talking point forever. Like the Corolla, the Civic was simple, comfortable and incredibly reliable. Being the 90s, air conditioning was an option, and not one your average retiree was likely to include. Your grandmother had as much need for cool air as she did for a dishwasher – unnecessary.

This car has travelled just 117,000kms since leaving the showroom 29 years ago and the condition reflects this. However, just a note: the cam belt was done at 56000kms, so well within the normal service interval on kilometres, but wildly out on time. Going by WOF data, the cam belt was changed over 20 years ago. It’s time for a new one, and not a big job on a Civic.

Now $6k can buy you something more modern with more bells and whistles, but it won’t have the 90s vibes, the incredible fabric and maybe not even a manual gearbox. And with this car you’ll be driving one of the nicest 29yo Civics out there. They’d welcome you with open arms at the bowls club, too.
