Looking forward – A new road safety policy

Looking forward The government will soon be releasing the details of its "Safer Journeys" road safety strategy. Submissions closed in October with the strategy due out in December. The aim of the policy is to cover all aspects of road safety to include vehicles, road users and the roads.

Among some of the main areas being examined is the lowering of the legal blood alcohol limit, increasing the penalties for drunk driving, increasing the legal driving age and extending the length of the learner driver period, and introducing compulsory third party insurance.

An area that may affect the car buying public could be the possible implementation of higher safety standards for both new and imported used vehicles. This could result in restrictions on the importation of certain cars. However, it’s a fine line between establishing a younger, safer national vehicle fleet and creating a situation where the cost of a replacement vehicle becomes prohibitive for too many people and the country effectively ends up with a fleet that, on average, is older and therefore less safe than what the policy had hoped to achieve. Maybe you’ll hold on to the old Kingswood for another couple of years?

The government is currently considering more than 1400 submissions and the policy is expected to be released in December. We’ll review the policy for you here early in the New Year.
