Top of the Class

Whether you want the wind in your hair and all the attention that comes with driving a red Porsche 911 Turbo cabriolet, or a luxury Italian grand tourer that will set you apart from all the BMW 3 series drivers, one of these could be for you. The Porsche will cost you an arm and a leg while the Alfa will cost you just a very reasonable arm OR a leg. Both are class acts but which would you choose? Read on...

First let’s look at the Porsche 911 Turbo convertible AWD with hard and soft tops from 2007. Being a 911 it’s fast and fun but add a twin turbo set up to the sublime 3.6L flat six and you get 480hp and a 0-100kph time of 3.4 seconds. It’s next level fast and fun. Rear seats are more suited to a dog of the handbag variety and fuel consumption will be prodigious if your right foot is made of lead. Everyone will stare at you and nobody will let you into traffic but find a twisty country road on a warm summer day and you’ll be having the last laugh. How much? Well the auction guide is $110,000-$120,000 which is much cheaper than a new one and it’s already well on its way to becoming a classic. More details here.

And what about the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce? Well it’s seen as competition for the 3 series BMW but, let’s be honest, whilst the BMW says “take me to my meeting” in a very serious tone, the Alfa is skipping the meeting and is already heading to a stylish restaurant. You get a 4 cylinder turbo charged engine with 276hp that’ll launch you to 100kph in 5.7 seconds. It’s actually pretty sporty for its class and loads of fun – a drivers car. Yes it’s an Alfa and if you live in a closed off bubble you’ll believe BMWs are uber reliable and cool and you’ll stick with them. However, if you want more style and an interior that makes you feel special then the Alfa might be more your thing. Cost? It’s available right now at $54,745 drive away. More details here.
